I should give a talk "Umpiring baseball games is just like being an open-source maintainer." In general, everyone appreciates you doing what you do and praises you for your committment, but make a smallest mistake or call a close play in the favour of the opposing team, and suddenly you're sh*t and who even let you do this, because clearly you have no idea what you're doing.

" rushes to create -enabled "

And don't fool yourself. Ukraine will create this. Yes, the Pandora's box will be opened. Despite all deep concerns and whining.

Because Ukraine has no choice. Deeply concerned western hippies afraid of "escalation" and deeply indoctrinated by the post-WWI idea "we must just stop fighting" left no other possibilities. Ukraine fights for its very existence against a genocidal country of morons and uses any viable opportunity for that.

Welcome to the future, boys.

Very close to setting up a very small markov chain bot and redirecting all AI bots traffic to that, because why should all the damage only go one way.

I am moving bots today. That's the kind of phrase my 7-year-old self would have though meant doing something awesome, but it's mostly making sure they don't send a bajillion unexpected emails or explode because they read the wrong venv.

Underwhelming experience of the day -- trying my best to add Ansible Lightspeed IBM WatsonX integration to vscode and failing.

The number of hoops I had to jump through just to get lost in the IBM WatsonX service/model/API screens is just... wow.

Umpiring a 18U-A game in full plate gear in +32°C (heat index +37°C) -- done that, do not recommend.

To boost Trump, prominent racist, transphobe, and con-man Elon Musk has launched a PAC that harvests voter data through a deceptive "voter registration" app. https://www.cnbc.com/2024/08/02/elon-musk-pac-voter-data-trump-harris.html

Don't want to come across as begging but I'm scared. 130+ jobs applied for, 2 interviews, 2 rejections. I know it sucks for everyone right now but I really need work.

Laid off while recovering from long COVID. Remote worker since 2015, or blue state with relocation assistance. Project 2025 is on the horizon and fucking terrified because even if Kamala wins, I don't think she's going to protect trans people in red states. At this point a month left before both health insurance & money run out.

All the usual SRE stuff plus all sorts of indepth Linux stuff, actually enjoy cursed bash and regexes. Not the World's Greatest Rockstar Dev but can get by in Python, C, and Go. Lots of monitoring, observability, and big data stuff, also done some heavy security work in the past, plus AuDHD hyperfocus on demand and willing to learn anything.

Will fix any problem in a company, technical, political, or other. Maybe now finding team lead level confidence but also autistic af.

I got into baseball to get my mind off coding, so your ad algorithm is way off on this one.

I'd like to wish everyone a very merry delete that platform.

Edited: apparently the tweet about "weird" being a slur is a fake and has been debunked, so I am taking it down (see, even I have to check my sources sometimes!) However, I am leaving the post up and replacing the fake tweet with a real one where he calls the word "cis" a slur and whines about how he will punish people who use it.

A reminder that everything being shared online about the Southport attacker is not real, and is being reshared by media outlets in Russia to peddle anti-migrant fears (and by IT people on LinkedIn).

The person also isn’t called Ali Al-Shakati, and did not arrive by boat.

The amount of LWN traffic that is just AI bots downloading the same stuff over and over again is staggering; it's increasingly hard to see any sort of human signal in there at all. Something is going to give here at some point...

Obligatory reposting of the same blog article I wrote in 2022: "Cross-fork object sharing in git is not a bug."
