@ptesarik @cas @migratory Baseband often runs Linux and uses lot of power. If basebands were "often" running while they should be off, people would be noticing. (That does not rule out occasional targeted attacks.)

@cas @migratory Actually, doing a "call" when the phone would not ring but would accept and connect audio is widely believed to be a feature available to network operators. SIM toolkit is rather powerful. Silent SMSes are widely used. I am not aware of malicious silent calls, but would not really rule that out.

@cas @migratory Not for most people. But we know targeted attacks are/were used for some people. If you make Saudis so angry they are willing to spend $1M attacking your phone, you should get phone with hw switches :-).

@cas Have you seen the complete attack on iOS where they injected using... was it through font? It is rather good story. Apparently the price of that attack was $1M or so, yet it was successful. And yes, in the end someone noticed. And yes, it is possible that _you_ would notice. But those attacks are directed at high value targets, as they are very expensive. So yes, people would notice widespread attacks on Android / iOS. Yet we know that targeted attacks happen, and we can be fairly sure most of them are not detected.

I'll be happy to meet and explain. Are you at Plumbers _now_ by chance? :-). Or in Prague later?

@xChaos @amarok @mkyral @radovan @logout Neprijemny zvukovy alert + cervena hlaska kde se musi zmacknout ok je "normalni", je to emergency alert system. Zablokovany fotak pri slabe baterii je take normalni. Takze bych to videl na "zmatek v prekladu".

@radovan @xChaos @mkyral @logout Umm, sorry, o telefonech neco vim. Muzeme si popovidat o tom kolik % bezneho Androidu je AOSP, a jak ten ekosystem funguje. Muzem zminit ze by bylo tezke pro Nemeckou vladu ukecat jihokorejskeho vyrobce aby vlozil zadni vratka _a mlcel o tom_. Plus ten detail ze zapadni vlady jsou +- omezene zakony.

@xChaos @mkyral @radovan @logout Ta cervena hlaska je "normalni" dneska mi to nekdo ukazoval, v Nemecku to nedavno testovali a v Rakousku to o par dni jelo na ostro kvuli zaplavam, je to system ne emergency alerty. Kamarad si stezoval ze mu to zablokovalo telefon, protoze bylo potreba macknout ok, ktery ale bylo prekryty nejakou jinou aplikaci -- ale zrejme to nebyl zamer.

@radovan @xChaos @mkyral @logout Ktera vlada? A ostatni vlady si takhle nechaj zabackdoorovat telefony? Velka cast androidu je open source, nikdo si nevsiml, nikdo neprotestuje? Telefony celkem sleduju, a mam pocit ze o tomhle bych vedel. Jak by to interagovalo s airplane modem? Na blackhatu o tom neni prednaska?

@rostedt @cas It should be said that printk() now behaves differently. Previously you could cli(); printk(); while(1); and message would go out. Now you need to panic() or some kernel parameter, IIRC.
