Dr. WiFi. Linux kernel hacker at Red Hat. Networking, XDP, etc. He/Him.

@vegard @marcan @CyReVolt @lschuermann @monsieuricon imho, anyone who's getting into kernel development or who is open to changing their workflow should use b4 right away and avoid using git-send-email

Ken Thompson's original Unix backdoor of "Reflections on Trusting Trust" fame was apparently never published. 40 years (!) later, here it is: 99 lines of code plus a 20-line shell script. That's it.

Nicely annotated and explained by Russ Cox:

Holy shit I think I’m in love.

, a way to serve vector of the entire world using a single static file and HTTP range requests.

It’s basically a static site generator for interactive maps. Tile servers are pretty much obsolete now. No database needed, you can run your interactive, smooth-zooming vector map from any HTTP storage. S3, Caddy running on your Wi-Fi router, even GitHub pages.

https://protomaps.com/

It’s open source & free to use. Wow. 🤯

Hey developers!

YEAH?

Do you like solving problems?

YEAH!

Do you like reverse engineering?

...YEah..

Do you like having zero documentation?

..uhm..

Buy a house! Enjoy a lifetime of fixing other people's undocumented hacks while introducing your own!

Love to see how mad the Onion is here. More folks should be this mad about this.

If you want a really solid critique, it's actually here too. They put their *all* into this piece and while it's sarcastic as usual, it really does cover *so many* aspects of how horrible the current trend of "news" in this space has been.

Go read it:

Web Summit CEO was forced to resign over this tweet:

“shocked at the rhetoric & actions of so many Western leaders & governments, with the exception...of Ireland’s government, who for once are doing the right thing."

“War crimes are war crimes even when committed by allies, & should be called out for what they are,”

The fascism of the tech industry knows no bounds. Anything other than aiding & abetting a world sanctioned genocide is not acceptable apparently.

Also open source people: "We're using FuzzBingBang Style library so you never have to leave the DOM and or know CSS! also React, also, here is a really complicated state machine that controls way too much, also please make sure to weed through our types that look like ABSOLUTE GARGLED JIZZ we spit out into a file! Oh, were you looking for the HTML? HAHAHA what HTML!?"

It’s amazing to me that a proposal to scan *literally ever private communication in Europe* is barely making newspapers, and we’re reading about legislative progress on blogs.

Lars Marowsky-Brée 😷

“What does it say for the future of open source, if foundations will just take it and give it a home."

That is a crucial part of modern public infrastructure that should not be profit-maximized by a single vendor, but be a public good.

Build value around *that*, not a fence.

Programmers fallacies about postcodes:
- A postcode covers a small geographic area
- A postcode is good enough to locate an end user for generating location suggestions
- A postcode will be in a single timezone
- A postcode only has a single state
- A postcode has no exclaves/enclaves

I would like you to meet 0872. Australia's largest postcode (I think), covers 3 states, has two cut outs (Warbuton and Alice Springs), and even still some mail outside of this area is routed via 0872

Day six of the trial against Sam Bankman-Fried was largely spent with the prosecution questioning Caroline Ellison, who testified about "alternate" balance sheets, bribes, Saudi financing, and her painfully intertwined personal and professional life.

A principle is a fundamental truth which guides your beliefs.

If your beliefs related to war crimes changes dependent on who the war crimes hurt, then you have a problem with your principles.

Wow. What an ordeal. I've only met Bradley once, and quite briefly, but he struck me as a kind and conscientious person, and I admire the work he and the SFC is doing for the FOSS community. Devastating to hear that he has to contend with all that!

I'm proud to call Bradley Kuhn a friend and am celebrating him joining the growing community of out-and-proud FOSS leaders.

But it is a tragedy when someone is forced out.

I've watched as Eben Moglen and SFLC have abused the legal system and attacked SFC, wasting the scarce resources of one of FOSS's most important charitable nonprofits, and am devastated to learn about the personal abuse Bradley has endured.

FOSS friends: please take the time to read this. https://ebb.org/bkuhn/blog/2023/10/11/moglen-sflc.html
