you laugh at the czech diacritics, but there are basically two and they are both above the letter, there is no diacritics that go under the letter, there isn't that silly l thing that i have no idea how to do without making the letter look like t... what a mess

@wolf480pl @piggo but how

@wolf480pl @pony just put it above l and it's very easy to tell from t

@piggo @wolf480pl you have to write them very large to see this, like there is no way i can do the ogonek in any other way than just little dot below the letter

@pony @piggo
hmm ok how about this:

you see that small ² you wrote after "how do I Ł" ?

put that at the bottom of an "a" and you've got an "ą"

@wolf480pl @piggo that's a question mark

@pony accurate cz-like diacritics is still far better than trying to adopt english orthography for a slavic language (official ukrainian transliteration, i'm looking at you)

@oleksandr @pony the only thing wrong with czech diacritics (ok beside °) is the godawful keyboard layout, that's just inexcusable

@piggo @oleksandr @pony with ě, the ˇ is on the wrong letter

@lkundrak @piggo @oleksandr the e diacritics like ě or ę that don’t modify the e itself but inject an extra letter, there is nothing correct just in principle

@lkundrak @oleksandr @piggo I meant like in Běchovice, you don’t get a different e, you get Bjechovice

@piggo @oleksandr @pony Try "ucw" extension. Available in debian, simply designates another shift as "add diacritics".

@pony @oleksandr @piggo ohh i didn't actually realize. i was thinking more like, "tchýně" where it obvioulsly should've been "tchýňe"

but that of course makes things even more embarassing

@lkundrak @pony @oleksandr yes ě is just stupid, there's no reason at all for it to exist. There is also mně and mě which both should be mňe, the only difference is in their usage in written form, to make the language more difficult

@piggo @oleksandr @lkundrak then you do it correctly in kůň

@pony @oleksandr @piggo uh oh i think that needs a ˆ

@lkundrak @oleksandr @pony theres no difference between kůň and kúň

its just another anal rule

also cf. trojúhelník

@piggo

FWIW ů is actually condensed obsolete "uo" diphthong that collapsed either into long "u" sound or back to the very original* "o". An example:

Vůl - vole

* "uo" developed from "o", compare Czech suffix -ův with Slovak -ov

@djasa @piggo @pony That's why orthography should not be set in stone and should be revised every now and then. Otherwise, you get English and French.

@lkundrak @pony @oleksandr @piggo

Well it's a bit more universal thing, romance languages have the same inconsistency stemming from the same cause after c and g.

@piggo

Well the ability to distinguish homophones in writing is not bad at all, such as famous "nech je b[íý]t" or say "nechal si zaplatit k[ůú]ru".

Some funny German examples are here in this thread: https://cztwitter.cz/@djasa/112518850378986968 😅

@djasa @piggo @pony @lkundrak I still find it funny Czechs often pronouncing those homophones differently but not being able to hear that difference at the same time. In Ukrainian it would be бити (bɪtɪ) vs бути (butɪ).

@oleksandr @djasa @piggo @lkundrak i've been incredibly frustrated by the old station announcements in ostrava where they'd always say the next stop is not důl jindřich but "duol jindřich"

@pony @oleksandr @djasa @lkundrak @piggo me too, even though I've never been there and don't speak Czech

@pony @oleksandr @djasa @lkundrak @piggo yeah I see. What kind of (possibly but not provenly methed-up) maniacs are running this service??

@ljs @oleksandr @djasa @lkundrak @piggo imagine your job is to go to a studio and say names of bus stops in ostrava into the mic for the entire day

@oleksandr @djasa @piggo @pony @lkundrak It is bad. 100 years ago y and i were pronounced differently. These days, they are not in most of the country... so good luck making text to speech. "sli jsme domu" vs. "sly jsme domu" is undecidable.
