@pony the only acceptable technical reason for this is fire

@ljs the aircon was dead despite it being full of people who got the one little coffee to have at least somewhere to sit on this packed train. So it may as well be, it’d probably cool it down now.

@pony are you guys trying to compete with british trains for shitness?

You'll never beat our 'more expensive than hiring a winged horse' element though

@ljs well I paid nothing for this first class (in ticket class, service level bit questionable) trip

The second is packed despite the train having some extras, few of which are some super old carriages with benches instead of seats and, more importantly, max speed of 140 km/h, which is less than the train has scheduled on quite a bit of the route so it’s progressively more and more delayed just because of that.

@pony yeah and for me to get a return to London from here is 40 GBP/day :))

to go 30ish miles. And they run 8 carriage trains when they should be running 12 carriage in the rush hour so you might have to stand the whole way.

Then pay separately for subway...

@ljs I have no idea what is that here, but then, 30 miles commutes via rail are only feasible on like two routes, they may be cheap, but is your life cheap enough to watch wheat fields from a rail bus at 40 km/h for that distance

@pony but at least you have some entertainment from crazy people on the train right? Do tell me that happens please.

@ljs sure? One of my tops of all time was a dude who spent the entire trip crying into the phone and repeating they just need to talk and it’s going to be okay again.

We all had cried over a breakup into the phone, right? No crazy there.

The trip was five hours long.

@pony haha what he kept that up for 5 hours?

Fuck yeah I've cried my eyes out over a breakup this is normal. We all have. I even tear up at the end of pan's labyrinth (gets me every god damn time), but not you know. For 5 hours.

Did liquid keep emerging even late on in the journey? You'd think he'd cry himself dry by that point

@ljs sometimes it’s more personal, one time I had a breakup and then just the late afternoon intercity train home

I have liquidated… it, myself, all… with a bottle of vodka.

This guy, oh well. He was strong guy. This is the Eastern Europe. But think of whoever was on the other end. They didn’t hang up.

@pony haha wow, impressive actually.

Yeah, with breakups a lot of things are understandable that wouldn't be usually.

Luckily now happily married, but life can trauma you in other ways...

@pony ah yeah it's really important to recovery properly after illness, don't rush back.

One of those counterintuitive things...

@pony @ljs the story seems suspicious, there's not such a solid GSM coverage in trains here.

@ljs @vbabka no, wrong again, that's northern bohemia, in the south, there are just horse carts

@ljs @lkundrak @vbabka also prague carts

yes, you'd get on this questionable thing and it'd take you to Prague, there was also one to Brno, it was bit faster than the train (5 hours instead of 6), but you could only pee during a scheduled stop in Jihlava at like hour 3.5

@ljs @lkundrak @vbabka i mean, technically, you could pee at any point, obviously, happened to me during one trip to some dude few rows in front of me and everyone next to me was like absolutely horrified when the bus was about to go uphill

@pony @lkundrak @ljs @vbabka my favorite thing about him is how he brings all this Buddhist swastika paraphernalia from India and puts it all around his house in Domanín, much to the confusion of anyone who walks around

@katka @lkundrak @ljs @vbabka i mean, weirdly enough, i have literally just one

@pony @katka @lkundrak @vbabka you guys have mad uncles.

My uncle did found a company and do all sorts of fun stuff like this and is fluent in Spanish to the point of living in Spain/Mexico/Majorca (but the native bit not the shit Brit holiday bit)

So I guess he's cool too. Also big into Buddhism and err... well you know. DMT

@ljs @pony Fun fact - the other way around, a return to Brookwood from London is £20, or even £13 if you go off peak with a Railcard.

(well the return from Brookwood to London isn't £40 either but it is indeed a little bit more than starting at London)
1
0
2
@liskin @pony yeah I mean I exaggerating because I fucking forgot the prices since I don't commute now LOL but on peak it's like at least 26 quid.

And definitely cheaper the other way round...

But it adds up easily in a week/month and you can only get cheaper if you pay for a year at a time, it's all a madness.

Permanent WFH is a huge luxury that I appreciate massively by spending all that money on synths

@ljs @pony @katka @lkundrak yeah you all have cool uncles. Mine is just peddling russian propaganda, cryptocurrencies and other pyramid schemes on facebook.

@ljs @pony Yeah the absence of super cheap season tickets in this country is still something I don't understand. Not an issue really post-covid for those who can work remote but that only means the inequality has become worse...
1

1
@liskin @pony most jobs are 'hybrid' though (ugh) and the train companies made absolutely sure you'd be paying the same price whether you come in 2, 3, or 5 days a week.

They did some lol-ish tickets for shorter periods that add up to... err... more expensive than the full season ticket.

Just the worst from top to bottom
1
0
1
@ljs @liskin czech railways made a monthly 10-day ticket, like, you have a month to consume 10 day trips, i am not sure it's like all that amazingly cheaper than singles
1
0
1
@ljs @liskin tried a random route, single-trip single-direction ticket is 100 czk (so 2k for 10 days of trips back and there), offered 10-day ticket is 1450, so that's bit of a discount there (also once you 'activate' it, you can take the trip as many times in the day as you wish, it's not just once there and back, but that's not immensely useful i think)

@pony
i went on karosa from pilsen to brno 20y ago. i think it was 7 or 8 hours with scheduled breaks in tabor and jihlava. drinked almost whole bottle of dobra voda while waiting for the bus in the long queue.
when i saw karosa, i realised drinking before departure was not good idea. every stop i evaluated possibilities to pee. i gave up after 1.5h and went to driver and asked him to stop. response was that in tabor is scheduled break and that there are toilets on station.
last minutes before tabor i saw black mist.
even i didn't drinked situation repeated before jihlava.
