mirrors.kernel.org is down because it threw 2 disks in a RAID-6 array and then ground itself to a halt. I'm trying to resuscitate it. Please use mirrors.edge.kernel.org (it's pointing at our only remaining server that is now up, in Amsterdam).

We need more redundancy for these systems. After exiting Equinix, we are reduced to just 2 nodes (and hence, we're now down to 1 until I rebuild the RAID array on the one that's currently offline).

If you can donate us a server with at least 70TB of space and lots of bandwidth, I'd like to hear from you, but it has to come with hosting, as we don't have any physical datacentres any more and must rely on the kindness of strangers to host them.

Hi! I might be able to help with this.
We can almost certainly put together a server with 70TB of disk space, and give you a place to host it. Just one question, what is a *lot* of bandwidth in this regard?

@mori It fluctuates wildly, but according to pretty graphs, we send about 1TB per hour, or ~2.5 Gbps sustained.

@purpleidea @luis_in_brief I can turn it around and ask why are Fedora, OpenSuse, Ubuntu, Oracle and other commercially backed distros still dependent on a network of public mirrors like it's still 1998?

Debian got both deb.debian.org on the Fastly CDN as well as more traditional mirrors.

They help with different routing, the universities or other organisations might be using it themselves and so on.

@thilo @cloudflare Akamai is already helping us with a bunch of other hosting, but for mirrors a hardware system with a specific drive configuration works best.

Ça prends beaucoup moins de ressources qu'une node mirrors.kernel.org, mais offre beaucoup plus de bénéfices immediats.

@_bapt_ @renchap Sweet. Yes, I know I didn't follow up because I got busy, but now there's actually... uh... a lot more interest in having non-US hosting companies also being part of the offering. So, having a couple of nodes with OVH at various EU locations would be fantastic and satisfy a lot of demand (including tech sovereignty ones).

@phf kernel.org is managed by the Linux Foundation, but it's a separate legal entity. It didn't use to be managed by LF -- that changed in 2011 when the existing board of directors hired LF to manage the organization directly.
