mirrors.kernel.org is down because it threw 2 disks in a RAID-6 array and then ground itself to a halt. I'm trying to resuscitate it. Please use mirrors.edge.kernel.org (it's pointing at our only remaining server that is now up, in Amsterdam).

We need more redundancy for these systems. After exiting Equinix, we are reduced to just 2 nodes (and hence, we're now down to 1 until I rebuild the RAID array on the one that's currently offline).

If you can donate us a server with at least 70TB of space and lots of bandwidth, I'd like to hear from you, but it has to come with hosting, as we don't have any physical datacentres any more and must rely on the kindness of strangers to host them.

@monsieuricon a quarter-billion dollar a year revenue, non-public-benefit, organization is asking for free hosting?

@luis_in_brief kernel.org is a charitable organization and mirrors.kernel.org is a community service that falls outside of the main scope of kernel.org duties.

@monsieuricon how much bandwidth is lots?

@palmer It will eat all available bandwidth.

@monsieuricon @palmer well, in that case, what's the expectation of available bandwidth?

@luis_in_brief @monsieuricon I also don't understand why the Linux Foundation wouldn't easily donate this and more??

@monsieuricon seems like something @hetzner would be able to easily sponsor, right? :)

@monsieuricon
Are torrents useful here? I can seed a few but I'm assuming the requests aren't that type of traffic

@monsieuricon couldn't there be any help/funding from "The Linux Foundation"? 🤷‍♂️

Hi! I might be able to help with this.
We can almost certainly put together a server with 70TB of disk space, and give you a place to host it. Just one question, what is a *lot* of bandwidth in this regard?

@mori It fluctuates wildly, but according to pretty graphs, we send about 1TB per hour, or ~2.5 Gbps sustained.

@purpleidea @luis_in_brief I can turn it around and ask why are Fedora, OpenSuse, Ubuntu, Oracle and other commercially backed distros still dependent on a network of public mirrors like it's still 1998?

@monsieuricon Let me talk it over with my compatriot here, but there’s a good chance we can do this for you. We have 31gbps of (mixed) transit at our primary DC (Midwest USA).

@mori that would be lovely, thanks! Even if we just have an option to use it as a failover in case of trouble (like today).

@monsieuricon
Akamai (Linode) and @cloudflare offer sizeable infra sponsoring to CNCF projects; I wonder if it would make sense for someone at LF to go talk to them?

@monsieuricon because Capitalism is extracting wealth from the free labour of others.

Packet and later Equinix really helped us all, and they were great people to work with. I hope you can find a stable long term solution soon. @purpleidea @luis_in_brief

@monsieuricon @purpleidea @luis_in_brief What's wrong with that?

Debian got both deb.debian.org on the Fastly CDN as well as more traditional mirrors.

They help with different routing, the universities or other organisations might be using it themselves and so on.

@can @monsieuricon Feel free to send an email with all the details to sponsoring@hetzner.com 😊 -Lea

@thilo @cloudflare Akamai is already helping us with a bunch of other hosting, but for mirrors a hardware system with a specific drive configuration works best.

@renchap @monsieuricon yes we talked about it when you last call for it, I got recently the go from my management, so I will get back to you on that part on monday!

@_bapt_ @renchap Sweet. Yes, I know I didn't follow up because I got busy, but now there's actually... uh... a lot more interest in having non-US hosting companies also being part of the offering. So, having a couple of nodes with OVH at various EU locations would be fantastic and satisfy a lot of demand (including tech sovereignty ones).

We won't be able to help immediately, but iIf you want to send an email to mori@nulled.llc we can talk about what we can do!

@phf kernel.org is managed by the Linux Foundation, but it's a separate legal entity. It didn't use to be managed by LF -- that changed in 2011 when the existing board of directors hired LF to manage the organization directly.
