From today I'm no longer a hobbyist kernel mm hacker but a full time professional :>)

Been a long road to get here but very excited and humbled to do this thing full time and do my best to improve memory management in the Linux Kernel!

@ljs My sincere condolences for having your hobby killed.

@oleksandr I'm sure I'll still do some hobbyist patches on top of the non-hobbyist patches because I'm cray cray

@ljs @vbabka @a1ba I hate the way we use that word so very much.

@ljs @vbabka @a1ba I mean, not as much as "regression", which could actually be useful instead, but still.

@vathpela @vbabka @a1ba hobbyist? Why's that?

I mean ultimately I'd call myself a kernel hacker, and I'm still a kernel hacker even if I'm being paid to do it now!

@ljs @vbabka @a1ba mostly because there's a lot of rhetoric about how many people are, and a lot of that only exists to say we're not professionals.

@vathpela @vbabka @a1ba I mean I see it from the opposite point of view - I see it as a bunch of kernel hackers, the vast vast majority of whom are employed full-time (because we all have bills to pay so only way to dedicate much time to it).

But whether they are paid or not I look at it in terms of what people DO.

And I have to say coming from being a hobbyist, at least in mm, there was little gate keeping on me because I wasn't 'professional'.

I mean I've attended mm conferences, meetings, etc. as random Mr. McNobody.

And in terms of idiots who want to look down on people who contribute the greatest open source project in literal history, quoting Game of Thrones - why should the lion concern itself with the opinions of the sheep?

@vathpela @a1ba @vbabka btw the gate keeping aspect was VERY different in other projects. Linux is particular good on this front.

@ljs Congrats but also, crap I missed the window of it being easy to get a pint together. 🙁

(Partly because I've been travelling a lot lately.)

So, um, are you still up for it? Do we need Vlasta to come and give us an extra incentive? Actually there's a certain kernel hacker named Punit who happens to be my neighbour so maybe that's enough?

@liskin haha yeah you did but actually that window was less good than I expected since in the 1st week I got ill and in the 2nd week my parents came over and I wanted to finish off a patch series...

Yes we should pint. @vbabka is too lazy to come to the UK also he fears our starobrno is better than in brno itself.

I may be going to plumbers in Vienna too...

@ljs @liskin @gregkh Oh right, yes, thank you for the reminder. The @linuxplumbersconf MC submission deadlines are getting really close!
