After missing the last one due to a sick kiddo, I'm excited the next PDX Linux Kernel Meetup is scheduled for Sept 18th!

Hope to see folks there!

6.17-rc5 is out:

https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/CAHk-=wh5AyuvEhNY9a57v-vwyr7EkPVRUKMPwj92yF_K0dJHVg@mail.gmail.com/

""Things remain normal - both the diffstat and the commit counts look entirely sane. […]

The one discussion that I was part of that happened last week that might be worth mentioning is that I've been complaining for years about useless "Link:" entries in commit messages that don't point to any new information. […] if that link ends up being just a pointer to the email that became that commit - with nothing else - that allegedly helpful link only added human cost for me.

The same ends up being true when chasing down bug reports.

So please: don't add useless information to commits in general, but in _particular_ don't add "Link:" tags that only point back to the original submission email. […]

Make the links be something *useful*. Make them point to the report for the bug that was the cause of the commit. Make them point to the discussion that explains the impetus for the commit. […]

Make "Link:" tags be something to celebrate, not something to curse because they are worthless and waste peoples time.

Please?

Linus""

So PSA we are now not allowed to add Link: tags anymore unless they add information that is not in the commit message. @axboe has the receipts.

It's ok apparently to add a link to the merge message of a Multi-Patch series.

Might want to start spreading that word...

Suggestion for the week-end: Open Source Summit Europe 2025 video binge watching.

The Linux Foundation has just released all the videos they took at the OSS EU 2025 conference in Amsterdam. They are so many of them that they are hard to count!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGDWXA32xG4&list=PLbzoR-pLrL6qKwLt8A787ggMLHNivOHve

So, now you can attend OSS EU 2025 and the Embedded Linux Conference Europe 2025 free of charge, or if you attended, you can watch the many interesting talks that you missed.

Thanks to Ross Burton for sharing the news!

Recording (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8Q8nIzEG6c ) and slides (https://static.sched.com/hosted_files/osseu2025/b3/pdx86-community-health-2025.pdf ) from Hans de Goede's talk "Creating a Healthy Vibrant [] Subsystem Community" are now online.

From the abstract: "End 2020 I became the maintainer of the drivers/platform/x86 (pdx86) kernel subsytem. The subject of this talk is my experience in creating a friendly welcoming environment, growing the pdx86 community and how this helped me to avoid burnout by being able to delegate to community members."

It seems like for the past few weeks my phone (Pixel 8) consistently fails Anibus on lore. Anyone else having issues? No problem on my actual computer which is more important use case.

Except speaking on Open Source Summit Europe (OSSE) 2025, I will also participate in Speaker Office Hours on Wednesday 10:30 AM: https://sched.co/27flt

Happy to answer some questions regarding first Linux kernel contributions, Embedded Linux Kernel, ARM64 laptops (yep, I am daily using Lenovo T14s with Qualcomm X1E SoC), Devicetree bindings / DTS or why your last patchset was not merged. :)

I once again ask you to please stop using gmail for mailing lists.

Attached is a screenshot of *just one* of the 4 nodes delivering various kernel mailing list traffic with a deferred queue of 100,000+ messages, all for gmail.

We are currently sitting on about 500,000 deferred messages, all for gmail. I am very, very close to just banning gmail addresses from large lists.

Looks like the risc-v community is learning from history! Hopefully this results in more upstream development efforts: https://riscv.org/blog/2025/07/risc-v-upstreaming/

Open Source Summit Europe 2025 is coming (in August)!

I will speak about two Linux kernel topics on introductory level, so if you want to learn something practical about Devicetree or using static analysis during development in Linux kernel then please come or watch online.

If you want to come and ask questions just find me around the hall or after the talks. We can also organize Unconference Session if there are more Devicetree topics.
