"Breaking News: Finland seized an oil tanker it suspected of involvement in damaging undersea cables and suggested it could be part of a Russian shadow fleet."

Things I wish for 2025: Steam would change the "date of birth" to a proper calendar widget.

"Whether the lack of a GCC-based Rust compiler actually became a bigger problem as predicted is debatable at best, though; much of the community would appear to be at ease with the existence of a single compiler for the language."

o_O

If this becomes a trend every single build with BuildRoot will need to pull also rustc, which adds to amortized cost. Cannot say anything that I 180 degrees full on disagree with this sentence. Rust is cool but it needs to build with GCC.

Read this page first time in my life: https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/maintainer/configure-git.html

It was named as "Configuring Git" and I had Git configured so...

I.e. I've used up until now also link-tag for completely wrong purposes...

I thought it was for links :-)

Lots of talk about donating money, which is great, but donating time is equally as impactful — we always need more editors, and it's these volunteers who create and curate our content! wikilove

@jarkko Thank you for asking! Current status: Saku is mainly a free digital magazine. Saku #51 (1/2024) is available as a PDF and, as a special comeback treat, an Amiga disk magazine: https://sakulehti.fi/51 Next Saku will be a PDF magazine.

There's a presser going on right now about the Estlink 2 electricity cable cut. In addition to Estlink 2 and C-Lion1 two of Elisa's fiber optic cables between Finland and Estonia have been cut and a third cable is damaged.

Apparently the coast guard and police have boarded an oil tanker by helicopter and taken control of the bridge. They saw the tanker dragging its anchors so seems very cut and dry.

This is the tanker: https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/details/ships/shipid:712379/mmsi:518998865/imo:9329760/vessel:EAGLE_S

@grrlscientist We could also argue eg ”why sponsor basic research which does not lead immediate results and not instead resolve poverty”. I consider that take as classic populism. Money by itself solves nothing. Working economy and innovation does because it has actual value. Cash is more like microscale debt with time dependent value.

Definitely will order Finnish Amiga Users Groups magazine now that is making a comeback in order to support grass root hacking culture in Finland!

We already have neo-retro computer magazine Skrolli:

@grrlscientist Doing stuff in space is crucial for civilization. It has provided us eg microprocessors and microwave ovens 🙂 It is the thing that drives innovation other than war industry.

@grrlscientist I think one thing that we should invest more money in space is asteroid mining. https://www.wired.com/story/things-are-looking-up-for-asteroid-mining/
