The year is 2025 and I can listen to pretty much any song ever recorded by even the most obscure artist, but I still can't do something as simple as legally buy a book by an award winning Norwegian author ("Tonje Glimmerdal" by Maria Parr). Why is this so messed up?

A small announcement from me that I am now officially able to spend a lot more of my time working on Linux kernel maintainer support duties. It's not a "change of hats," but I will be able to spend a lot more time wearing my maintainer support hat on this year!

New year resolution: I will try to swear less. For example, instead of "holy crap" I will say "deifecation."

@major it's not any better when a parent has an apple device, either. I was very happy when my kids got old enough that I could no longer deal with Apple's horrible UX of having to type my iCloud credentials in twice to approve any app install, and then hoping it would work.

โ€œFailure to comply with lawful orders could mean that Apple would no longer be able to operate an App Store or distribute content in the country,โ€ representative said to Reporters without Borders.

"Lawful orders" here refers to the orders of censorship department. Very similar, I assume to "lawful orders" that send missiles to destroy homes in .

In other (not really) news, Big Tech will do anything for money. Disgusting.

@benjins It seems to work for me without the trailing slash, so I'm not sure. It's possible it's some artifact of global caching?

Never have I felt so vindicated, or so shitty about being vindicated, as I do whenever I recall being loudly booed at an SF convention ten years ago for saying โ€œElon Musk is not Tony Stark, heโ€™s not your friend, & heโ€™s not out to save anyone or anything.โ€

I should start paying attention to Canada/Quรฉbec politics again. I've been hyperfocused on Russia's aggression against Ukraine, but there are some significant changes in the political landscape happening in Canada, too. I'm wholly on the side of Ms. Freeland, and I totally see how a person who has long fought against oligarchy (see her book "Plutocrats") would be ill-fitting in Trudeau's government that is trying to play footsies with the incoming king of oligarchs South of the border.

@sayrer I suggest you try running a community website in, say, Texas, and start using the Mexican flag for the Spanish version of the site. I believe you'll quickly find out just how politically charged such choices can be.

I know, I'll use the US flag for English, and the France flag for French. At least this way I'll equally piss off anglophone and francophone quรฉbecois.

(This is wix.com, by the way, who even in 2024 can't conceive that a single country can use multiple languages.)
