I surround myself with Slavs in life and they mock me and I mock them and all are happy. Well ok not happy but bemused without a smile...

Honorary Slav status confirmed.

It's noticeable, and I thought that meant you had Slav heritage. Goes to show, you never know.

Wait, you surround yourself with Slavs in RL too, not just online?

@dougmerritt @lkundrak I'm married to one ;)

But no heritage, I am boring North European. Though a wee bit of Irish, I think 1/8th which is more than most of the guys in many bits of the US who claim they are defo Irish have ;)

@ljs @lkundrak
I'm like 9th generation American or something, and judging by the work of the few relatives who are hot on genealogy, 100% English descent, as far as I can tell, which is very weird in the U.S.

Nobody cares, except it means I have no colorful stories to tell, unlike e.g. my wife's parents.

@dougmerritt @lkundrak yeah at the end of the day it genuinely doesn't matter haha, I like the Slav cultural nature which to me is (very) dark sense of humour, practicality, grit + love of pinting

I have actually noticed some of that, albeit at a further remove than your observing.

@dougmerritt @lkundrak I mean to me this is like what it is to be 'English' I think somebody who emigrated here and is a naturalised citizen and moans about the weather is as English as somebody else.

To me it's all about the person not the heritage which is a (possibly) few alive people and mostly dead people

@ljs
Yeah, same to me here in the U.S.

It did get me a very special tour of Japan though. Briefly. :)

I have certain connections to the war, but indeed I don't talk about the war. As for modern Germany: too much schnitzel.

@dougmerritt @ljs @lkundrak For the record, if you don't like schnitzel, you won't like Czechs eitherโ€ฆ

@ljs @lkundrak adopt a slavic name then? Vavra Stojak, for instance.

@ptesarik @ljs @lkundrak
Oh, I like schnitzel just fine. But I also like variety, not schnitzel every meal every day.

Lack of variety is, of course, a problem everywhere in the world outside of major cities, so it's a general problem.

@oleksandr @vbabka @ptesarik @ljs but then we'd confuse it with slovak instead of russian. if i were to choose, i'd choose to be confused with the polish

@lkundrak @vbabka @ptesarik @ljs You overestimate people's awareness of Slovak orthography. Everything that is not Romance/German is probably some sort of Western Slavic, which is 70 % Polish anyway just by pure probability given its population.

@oleksandr @vbabka @ptesarik @ljs note i said "we"
i'm fully aware that to whoever looks from the outside, the western slavic stuff looks all the same, because it kind of is -- croatian, slovak, czech.
except for serbian, of course. for some reason their written text sometimes looks russian.

@lkundrak @oleksandr @vbabka @ljs I once saw Belorussian written in Latin letters, and that looked markedly similar to Polish.

@lkundrak @oleksandr @vbabka @ljs Poles should be Northern Slavs. They could even move to the North Pole.

@ptesarik @lkundrak @vbabka @ljs Because it is very close to Polish, similarly to Ukrainian. Don't be fooled by the shitty Slavic languages taxonomy. It's not Eastern/Western/Southern. The Eastern Slavic group was invented to justify Muscovian influence on neighbouring countries, while the Muscovian language itself is much closer to Bulgarian, which is Southern. There are two Slavic language groups really: Northwestern and Southeastern. This way, it makes much more sense once one starts to study them.

@lkundrak @oleksandr @vbabka @ptesarik @ljs this is of course not unique to the slavdom, like the raging (somehow) debate if there actually is a "moldavian language" or it's just romanian written with the Cyrillic (it's the latter, but psst)

@pony @ptesarik @lkundrak @ljs @vbabka Officially, there's no Moldavian language any more, even in Moldova. Unofficially, it never existed, too.

@oleksandr @vbabka @ptesarik @ljs @filabrazilska i swear i've seen a video from a serb-croat war where the croats captured a serb who was left behind.

as soon as he realized they're not going to just murder him, he legit went on with this "brothers" bullshit, much to the amusement of the croat soldiers

edit: found it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYfgLaVCnKM

@oleksandr @lkundrak @vbabka @ljs I have always thought Rusyn is a language of its own. If you go that way, you might call Slovak a Ukrainian dialect and then even liberate Slovakia from mafia once you're done with muscovians. Somehow I'm not convinced this would bring more peace to the land.

@oleksandr @vbabka @ptesarik @lkundrak @ljs We do have "ch" as in "chleba", and then accented letters. That's not really sane, either :-(.

@pavel @ptesarik @lkundrak @ljs @vbabka In current official Ukrainian transliteration the /x/ sound is represented by "kh" frankenstuff, which is not good either, but we are yet to find a better way. For instance, in the Slovenian language, it's just "h", but they do not have /ษฆ/ sound.

1

@oleksandr @pavel @lkundrak @ljs @vbabka The better approach is to use "x" for the /x/ sound and "ks" for the /ks/ sound. Such tekst then looks a bit Polish, and I think that's beautiful.
