@pony that costs a lot more than a metro ticket

@pasty you can't really take a metro between IPP and Namesti Miru (through that connecting tunnel) anyway

@pony but the hand pump didn't work, so I demand a refund. Also didn't dare to use the weight scale or @ljs would laugh at me.

@ljs @vbabka well, it used to be like that ... in mid 1800's?

either way, my grandma had a thing like this in her garden, it's actually kinda fun to use

@pony @vbabka When you say 'your grandma' do you mean your Babka? Your Vlastimil Babka?
1

2
@ljs @vbabka no, in czech, you are supposed to call your own grandma babička, babka is a random old hag

@pony @vbabka oh sorry have I been saying Vlasta the random old Hag wrong all this time?

@ljs @lkundrak @vbabka yeah, babka is like "i couldn't sit in the tram because i gave me seat to some babka"
1

@pony @lkundrak @vbabka and that babka, in fact, might have been a vlasta

In which case TAKE THAT SEAT BACK!

@ljs @pony @lkundrak @vbabka it's not really derogatory though, we have much better words for that like baba, babizna or babice
2

@piggo @pony @lkundrak @vbabka can I say Vlasta is an adorable babizna without being rude?

@piggo @lkundrak @ljs @vbabka bába is still neutral-ish, babizna and babice is definitely a hag

I will say this from now on

@piggo @lkundrak @ljs @vbabka taxonomy for old ladies in czech is obviously a difficult topic

@piggo @pony @lkundrak @vbabka imo it's Russian + extra trolling, but not as much trolling as Polish

@piggo @pony @lkundrak @vbabka yeah but you have about 30 different squiggles and they all mean different things.

At least in English we have the common courtesy to have grammatical rules that we constant break all the time and you just have to memorise the 20,000 exceptions to every single rule.

@pony @lkundrak @piggo @vbabka I really need to know where Vlasta fits into the Babka tree

@ljs @pony @lkundrak @vbabka czech has just three and two of them are the same, written differently for no reason at all

@ljs @pony @vbabka oh, at least in slovak it's a perfectly fine way to say grandma. kinda assumed it's the same in czech :(

this is usually the way reading polish feels. they always seem to use the least correct but still marginally okay forms of the words.

remember the street view that vlasta shared some time ago, possibly of his house? i think the number plate read "u 4 babek" -- (at) four grannies'

@vbabka @pony @ljs that is unfortunate

a friend of mine complained once that people in public transfer seldom offered their seat to her when she was pregnant. now, found it odd, because i was never pregnant but been offered a seat when i've been hungover.

perhaps something is wrong with y'all

@ljs @pony @vbabka to bring some more noise into the conversation; to word root is just "baba", much like "mama" among the words a toddler can say. it can mean "granny", but also any woman really. "babka" and "babička" are two levels of fairly regular diminutive form, making the word a little nicer. but as has been said, these curiously shift the meaning a little. "babka" is definitely old and "babička" is likely a grandmother. context matters and makes it difficult to use the words wrong really

@ljs @pony @vbabka see -- "babička" is essentially the same as "bábuška" in russian, except we say "bitch" instead of "bush" there

(you can also encounter baba jaga, a ježibaba, deep in the woods here)

@lkundrak @vbabka @pony I look pregnant and never got offered a seat, I sense a pattern

@lkundrak @pony @vbabka It is like he lives in a commune of babkas, there may be some deeper satanic tale here.

Perhaps they are an evil sect serving the dark lord in mysterious ways

@lkundrak @ljs @pony the plate had also a picture of 4 mushrooms, because babka is also a name of a mushroom, or a name of a bird (of tit species), or a bug, or a scythe sharpening device, and I might be forgetting more meanings still.

@vbabka @lkundrak @pony also the BEST slab maintainer I know??

@vbabka @pony @ljs vsadim deset babek that you forgot something

(had no idea about most of these meanings, and that must be the reason i can't claim being fluent in czech)

@ljs @pony @vbabka that's probably because you don't spend enough time in the gym!

@vbabka @pony @ljs btw i'm not sure other meanings translate to slovak too well, but there's a slovak saying "babka k babce, budú kapce" that oddly enough uses czech form just so that it rhymes?? is it also actually used in czech? web search seems top suggest it's not

@lkundrak @pony @ljs never heard it before. Does the second part mean it's gonna rain?

@vbabka @pony @ljs it means if you save little by little, you'll get new boots (that's an archaic word for boots made of 😮 sheep wool)

@lkundrak

@ljs @pony @vbabka

i can confirm as our family is truly czechoslovak. me 'west-bohemian' (mostly districts cheb and pilsen), wife and daugther east-slovakians (district michalovce), 2 kids moravians (born in brno). czech grandma is 'babi' and slovakian 'babka'

@indy @pony @ljs @vbabka here one slovakian granny is "babička", another is "i'm not going to meet that witch ever again"

@lkundrak @indy @pony @vbabka In a way Vlasta does possess the power of a witch or a wizard for deleting code and handing out slabs

@ljs @lkundrak @indy @pony so with the topic of surname done, let's now focus on the first name, as today seems to be a particularly good day for that!
