@okias Well... libcamera is designed for C++&CPU, not Rust&GPU, so integration will be fun. There's more low-hanging fruit, like for example enabling caches for image data (ouch!). And yes, GPU is likely very suitable for most of the ISP pipeline. Unfortunately, for video recording, you need some kind of video encoder, and writing that for GPU is not going to be weekend project.

@Gargron You can easily tell if people know what they are talking about. If they say "language model" they probably do, if they say "generative AI", they may, if they say "AI" they usually don't.

@rmader @libcamera It does not need to live in libcamera, but what you ultimately want is good quality video, and there a lot of integration will be required. You want different AE/AF while recording video. Plus you need (for example) to tune debayer well to work nicely with the video encoding, yet leave enough resources for the encoding pipeline.

@libcamera I have patches to get that working on PinePhone. And yes, it is step forwards, but there's still huge ammount of work ahead. This is AE (auto-exposure), and AE is quite easy. AF is harder (and missing from this). Plus, one day we'll want video recording. That's hard. And we'll want to take photos. That's also quite hard. Millipixels has some parts, but more should go in libcamera, and we really need drivers for jpeg/mpeg encoding.

@cas It may be more than that. I'm pretty sure that resolution of the touchscreen does not have to be equal to resolution of the display...

@unixroot Actually, I have many machines. I am using X11 on my main ones, but I believe Wayland is there on the phones...

@mntmn Yes, I mean such stuff. You'll also need some kind of protocol for setting up individual LEDs, no? (If you use their's protocol, I have a kernel driver, but it needs cleanup and mainlining).

Bad thing about Li-ion batteries is that each phone seems to have its own size. I have interesting/mystery Firefox OS phone, that came without battery and refuses to turn on. But there's a good thing, too. There are so many Li-ion powered devices that you may have "compatbile" battery, already. I did. Battery from Winner WG8 seems to fit inside mystery phone case. Ok, it needs a lot of padding... but I may be able to try the phone out. Not sure if trying to charge it in it is good idea, but...

@mntmn So I am not designing computers. I'm kernel hacker, not hardware hacker. But I've tried to get CutiePi to work (and have driver for that), and friend did a talk about MutantC. Open hardware seems to spread, but people seem to design their own interfaces, and that is not great.

@mntmn Should we have a talk about system controller <-> CPU interface, so that we get something generic any reasonable manufacturer can use, and so that we limit amount of kernel drivers needed?

RGB888 in libcamera is same as BGR24 in SDL. Of course, RGB24 _and_ RGB888 exist in SDL, too... they are just different.

Outside, there's a heap of snow, and more is falling. It's not great for riding, so I opt for cross-country skis. At the last minute, I realize I don't have any snacks, so I grab two apples. I encounter a family, and they ask if I'm taking the horse for a ski ride. I say yes. A little later, we pass by them, and they mention they "expected the horse to pull me." Alright then, I grab onto the mane, and Zlutak starts trotting. They have to admit that it's pulling me, but half of the apple is gone. We repeat the exercise, and the other half of the apple disappears into the horse's mouth. I'll save the rest for the way back...

We turn around, and I probably won't need the lead anymore, so I turn it into a loop around its neck so I don't have to pull on the mane. Zlutak looks excited, so we go... Interestingly, he somehow manages to understand what I want from it, even when I'm pulling on the same piece of rope I'm trying to steer with. He's just clever. We stop with a verbal command, and it deserves a piece of apple... well, except the apple disappears entirely. For a moment, I consider that maybe he just wants to go home, so if I just stick to... but no, that would be unfair.

Now I have an excited horse and no snacks. I stand in front of him, and surprisingly... the horse seems to understand that the lesson is over and follows me without much fuss. Great!

Venku je kupa snehu, a dalsi pada. Na jezdeni to... no moc neni, tak beru bezky. Na posledni chvili si uvedomuju, ze nemam zadny pamlsky, tak beru aspon dve jablka. Potkavam nejakou rodinku, jestli pry beru kone z bezkama.. a ja ze jo. Za chvili jdem kolem nich, a ze pry "cekali ze kun potahne me". No tak jo, chytam se za hrivu a zlutej jde do klusu. Musi uznat ze me tahne, ale pul jablka je pryc. Opakujem cviceni, a v konovi mizi i druha pulka. Zbytek posetrim na cestu zpet...
Otacime to, a voditko uz nejspis nebudu potrebovat, tak z nej delam smycku okolo krku abych ho nemusel tahat za hrivu. A kun vypada nadsene, tak jedem... Zajimavy je, ze nejak zvlada poznat co po nem chci, a to i kdyz me tahne za stejnej kus spagatu kterym se snazim ridit. Je proste sikovnej. Zastavujem na slovni povel, zaslouzi si kus jablka ... no jenze jablko v nem mizi cely. Chvili uvazuju, ze on domu proste chce, takze kdyz se proste budu drzet... ale ne, to by bylo nefer.
Jenze ted mam nadsenyho kone a zadny pamlsky. Radim se pred nej a kupodivu... kun nejak pochopil ze to je konec lekce, a bez vetsiho spechu me nasleduje. Fajn!
