Riding horses, hacking computers, phones and smartwatch.
Znam ji a dela to dobre.

@airtower Is there place where pinephone kernel developers gather? Preferably something I can access over IRC or email?

@ptesarik @ljs @agilegeoff Worth what? Language models are pretty useful for speech recognition and automatic translation, at least. So improving LLMs will lead to improvements in that area, at least. Translating C to JavaScript is stretch, but I used that, too. LM research was stalled for 20+ years, now its moving. Good, I guess :-).

Looking for operating system; preferably simple&opensource one. DOS-class, that is has filesystem and runs programs from filesystem, but single-tasking, without user/kernel protection. For machines with > 16MB RAM we have linux. I'm looking for something for machines between 128KB and 16MB. Extra point if it is not too ugly and is Unix-style, 8.3 naming convention is close to disqualifying DOS...

@airtower Yep, kernel development would be way easier if debug loop was not in minutes...

@cas Some day I'd like to play with Linux-based smartwatch, but for now I'm very happy with Espruino-based Bangle.js 2. Also open source, and not having Linux has advantages for size and battery life.

@cas It is. And DRM is just an euphemism for treatcherous computing, abuse of power, or something like that. Plus, it leads to landfills full of electronics...

@jiska Dunno. Location tracking is easy to do on mass scale, while you are defending against targeted attacks. The location tracking data are collected, and they'll probably find a way to bad hands sooner or later. I'd prefer not to be part of that database. Anyway, if you ever find phone that can lock on given BTS, I'll be very interested :-).

@martijnbraam Ok, I'll keep looking. So far it looks to me like even megapixels are limited to 8.5 fps on mobian I'm using.

@airtower I guess you'll have to find out. Giving binary code under GPL-2 is strange; but strictly speaking, you should be able to redistribute the binaries. If it is good enough for linux-firmware... who knows. Anyway, the driver will be step in right direction.

lds and Makefile, and I have code running bare-metal (ok, s-mode) on risc-v. Wow. Easier than expected. https://gitlab.com/tui/tui/-/tree/master/vroot?ref_type=heads

@airtower Is rtl8723cs very different from rtl8723bs? Anyway I guess understanding if existing driver can be adapted is the first step. Not sure about good introductions, but network drivers are conceptually quite simple, and wifi is not an exception. Good luck :-).

@martijnbraam I'm debugging low framerates with main camera on PinePhone. I can't convince libcamera to get more than 8.5 fps. So I tried megapixels, I could not clone from main site, so I have:

519570a267ad8e70c16f45c7157ac195f57c4c66 (HEAD -> master, origin/master, origin/HEAD)
Remove calibration data for PP front camera (MR 34)

Preview looks nicely smooth, but AFAICT it is around 7fps. I'm on mobian. Any idea of possible causes / how to debug that?

@monsieuricon Actually it should be "add" and "del", as Alpine does. Having to type "apt-get install" feels wrong after experience with alpine.

@gregkh @Logical_Error Having kernel sources does not mean bootloader is not locked, for example. We are not protected by GPLv3. List of Android phones usable with custom kernels is not that long, basically OnePlus 6 or Droid 4, see https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Devices for details.

@krcmar Hele nevim. Mam dve zarizeni -- relativne bezpecne PC a neprilis bezpecny telefon, a utocnik by musel kontrolovat obe. S bankovni aplikaci mu staci kontrolovat jedno...

@libcamera But it seems ov64a40 driver is not yet supported by mainline kernel, yet, so there's still more work to do?
